Experience and Battle Scars

The following précis of my life to date is as accurate as I remember and where possible I have avoided the dull tedious periods of Groundhog Day!

1968 ~ A home birth as the last of five in a small council house on an estate in Garlinge, interestingly less than a mile from the detached sea view house we live in today. Mum was a school teacher and Dad was a coal miner.

1969 – 1986 ~ Because of Mum’s job I ended up going to school from about 6 months old and became an incentive for the other children to do their work so they could play with the baby. All my siblings managed the Kent test and went on to academic success. I was the academic disappointment of the family and cruised through what became 17 years of education with not much to show for it except some mediocre grades in IT and Math, which was useful.

1986 – 1989 ~ My employed career lasted just 3½ years. My first 6 months designing kitchens on an Apple Lisa (the forerunner of the Apple Macintosh). During these 6 months in my spare time I developed some software on the Amstrad PCW for a Ford garage in Deal. Upon presenting the software to the Dealer Principle I somehow secured myself a job, resulting in my being the Service Manager for the next three years.

1989 – 1996 ~ The first 7 years of self-employment came with the hardest lessons to learn. I continued to develop software in various compiled object oriented programming languages, honing my craft. I set up a computer games shop during the boom for this industry, but failed when I went into a pricing war with a competitor. If only I had studied economics at school. I restarted as a used computer sales business, still with the software development angle when opportunities arose. During these years I would sell anything to anyone. I really didn’t know who I was and certainly didn’t know who my customer was. We suffered bad debts from poorly selected clients along the way, but in 1996 it all changed when the company was hit by a Nigerian fraud. Back to the beginning again.

1996 onwards ~ This re-start in a new company gave me a great chance to rethink everything I ever knew. Business Computer Solutions was born. A business to business only venture. No credit card payments being taken. No mail order sales. A brave move to have what I considered to be a tightly defined avatar - or just an early adopter of what is taken to now to be best practice.
